The reason I came to Eduwell Boston wasn’t because I wanted to send my child to one of the most prestigious universities. In middle school, my child took all honor classes and graduated with honors. However, he started to lose his interest in school in the middle of his freshman year as he began to hang out with new friends. From all ‘A’s, his grades were covered with ‘C’s and it wasn’t hard to find ‘F’s on his homework and quizzes. During his sophomore year, he failed to stay in most of the honor classes. Not only did he lose his interest in school, but he also moved away from family and it became routine for him to come back home very late after wandering around the town with his new friends.
My husband and I tried our best to bring back our old son, but we were stuck in this situation. After some time, we made the decision to begin the process of sending our child back to Korea before his junior year. To us, it wasn’t even an issue whether our son gets accepted to a good university or not. Our biggest interest was on how to help our son to move away from his current lackadaisical lifestyle to a more productive and meaningful one.
Before we finalized our decision of going back to Korea, we suggested one last option to our son, and he gave in and agreed to our option, as it was very stressful for him to suddenly be in a different environment where he would not speak or understand the language. Our suggestion was instead of going back to Korea, he would enroll in a SAT prep course and continue going to a tutoring place until his GPA is improved.
Starting that day, I began to look for a SAT tutoring place. Realizing that calling every single SAT tutoring center and comparing them would take a lot of effort, I called Eduwell first. While talking to Dr. Lee, I simply had a feeling that Dr. Lee would take a good care of my child. As a person who spends hours before deciding on something, it was very unusual of me to choose Eduwell after just one call. However, I was so confident that the center would take very good care of my child, that I didn’t even call other places.
On the first day at Eduwell, it seemed as if my child didn’t even want to make any eye contact with people; his self-esteem had reached its lowest point. Thankfully, Dr. Lee carefully encouraged him and helped him to gradually regain his self-confidence. If he was forced to go to the tutoring center before, now he looked forward to going back to the center. His school grades steadily improved, and the respect from his teachers and his friends that came along with his improvement led him to enjoy school days once again. Compared to before attending Eduwell, his SAT score also improved greatly. However, because his first two years of high school GPA were so low, his junior and senior years’ GPA couldn’t bring his total score up high enough to apply to any colleges. Regardless, Eduwell greatly assisted my son in receiving a high SAT score, they provided top-quality information on numerous colleges, and lead him to write an essay that revealed his hidden potentials. In the end, we were able to apply to highly ranked universities that we had never even dreamt of applying before. All of these universities were recommended by Dr. Lee, and the result was exceptionally successful. With all the help from Eduwell, my son was accepted to one of the most prestigious universities and even received a scholarship award.
Eduwell’s teaching style is very personalized and is customized to each individual. It is not like having a group of students in one classroom and covering materials without paying attention to individual’s learning pace. Also, as I recall, there has never been an occasion when a class started late. Yet, it was very rare for a class to end on time. It was very usual to see a 1.5-hour class becoming 2-hour class. Also, Dr. Lee gave additional homework and made everyone to take vocabulary tests after classes, and none of these were even included in tuition.
The vocabulary test that Dr. Lee provided was intended to expand one’s vocabulary, but it was also a method of checking how much each student is spending time/interested in studying and a way of communicating with students. The day when my son didn’t memorize any words, the day he memorized about 50% of the given words, and the day when he memorized 100% of words perfectly… Dr. Lee listened to my child and her care positively affected my son to change his attitude.
I believe my child must have been a tough one to teach compared to other children who come to Eduwell. However, I don’t think the passion Dr. Lee showed us and how she treated my child is different and special in anyway because she and all the teachers at Eduwell truly understands that everyone is different and listens and cares about each child’s story. If someone asks me about Eduwell, without any hesitation, I would definitely recommend sending his or her child here because I believe that under Dr. Lee’s supervision and Eduwell’s customized teaching style, everyone will successfully achieve his or her goal.
